Good morning. I have a mentally handicapped son. I'd like some information on the aid you offer, please.
Good morning. Take a seat, please.
How old is your son?
18.
What's the extent of his handicap?
He's certified as being 65% disabled, but I'd like to know if he'd be able to work or carry out an activity of some kind.
Firstly, our occupational assessment and guidance team will have to interview him to evaluate his social, vocational and educational skills. On that basis, we'll be able to suggest the most suitable activities for him and a centre for him to attend.
What sort of activities do these centres run?
There are different types of centres. Occupational centres offer a wide range of activity programmes and workshops, all of which are aimed at acquiring social and vocational skills. They also organise complementary activities, such as craftwork, drawing, sport, workshops on personal care and language improvement, etc.
Vocational integration services prepare the people they assist to take a step further in special work centres. Such centres carry out productive work and activities geared to acquiring social skills, with a view to the people who attend them being able to get a job in an ordinary company in the future.
Would my son earn a wage in these centres?
Only in special work centres, where he'd carry out productive work and therefore be paid for it.
Is he entitled to an economic benefit?
You can apply for an economic benefit called a non-contributory disability pension (pensió no contributiva per invalidesa). The amount of the pension varies, depending on your son's income and the earnings of the members of his family with whom he lives. To apply for the pension, he'll need to have a valid residency permit and a certificate from the foreign citizen branch of the National Police Headquarters showing the amount of time he's spent in Spanish territory as a legal resident.
Thanks very much for the information. Can I make an appointment for my son to visit, please?
