EL NIE

Foreigner Identity Number (Número d’Identitat d’Estranger, NIE) is a personal number, unique and non-transferable. It consists of 9 digits (7 numbers and 2 letters). People who are authorized to remain in Spain, these with an administrative file open and these with professional, economic or social interest in Spain will obtain a NIE.

Foreign people who travel to Spain for financial, social or professional reasons can apply for the NIE to the Directorate General of Police (if we are nationals of the UE), to the Sub-Delegation Government (if we are non-EU nationals) or through the Spanish consulates abroad.
