ADVICE ON ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND SAFETY AT HOME

If you are going to be away from home for several days, turn the water, gas and electricity off at the mains.

It is a good idea to ventilate your home for at least 30 minutes a day, to prevent unpleasant smells and dampness.

Check the sealing between the tiles in your kitchen and bathroom once a year to prevent dampness from affecting your walls.

Avoid blocking pipes. Do not dispose of solid waste down the drain. Similarly, do not pour paint, plaster or any other product that could solidify and block your pipes down the drain.

Gas vents are compulsory. Do not cover them up or place furniture or equipment in front of them.

If you smell gas, do not use switches, matches or lighters. Open a window and contact your gas company.

Gas cylinders must be kept in an upright position in a well ventilated place (balcony, utility room, etc.).

Your gas system must be inspected every 5 years. Ask the owner of your home when the last inspection was carried out.

Unplug electrical devices when you are not using them.

Do not overload sockets with lots of devices at the same time. Doing so might cause a short circuit or a fire.

Do not let children touch sockets, as they could electrocute themselves. You can use specially designed protective devices to keep children away from sockets.

If someone is electrocuted, do not touch them. Switch off the electricity at the mains immediately.

Never touch sockets if you are wet or have nothing on your feet.

Never position heaters next to curtains or inflammable materials.

Unplug your television aerial if there is a storm.

Do not smoke or use candles while you are in bed.

Do not leave pans unattended on a lit stove. If something catches fire while you are cooking, do not pour water over it. Switch off the gas and cover whatever is burning with a pan lid or a wet cloth.

IF THERE IS A FIRE:

Call the fire brigade straight away.

Never use lifts.

Close all doors behind you on your way out.

It is a good idea to cover yourself with a wet blanket .

If your apartment fills up with smoke, get down on the floor and crawl, as smoke will gather at the top of a room while oxygen will collect at the bottom.
